RECORDING EQUIPMENT BASICS

                                                  RECORDING EQUIPMENT BASICS

How to create a home studio for the low and get the best results, on Pre-Production.
which will cut cost by a good amount when you take your music to the studio to mix and mastering.

These are 7 basic pieces of equipment you need to create your studio

  1. A MICROPHONE
  2. AN AUDIO INTERFACE
  3. DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATION ( DAW )
  4. DIGITAL KEYBOARD
  5. STUDIO MONITER
  6. HEADPHONES
  7. CABLES

I did not include computer assuming you already have one, if you don't have a computer then I advise that you get one, you don't have to spend thousands ( around $600) will cover it.
Your computer must be fast, a CORE- I OR CORE 2 PROCESSOR should be good enough.

I advise to buy your computer new, and you can buy the equipment second hand. and save even more.

1. MICROPHONE : The cheapest affordable mic can go for $70 this is a USB MIC called                                                    SNOWBALL  if you can spend around $100 to $150 then these mics are the best                                  choices. STUDIO PROJECTS B1  , AKG C2000B OR THE MXL 990

2. AUDIO INTERFACE : The AUDIO INTERFACE connects your mic's instruments etc to your                                                  computer. ( this is the simple explanation) for $150 to $200 the
APOGEE INTERFACE could be purchased on a used market and works                                                well to clean up sound between the instruments, mics and your computer.
FOCUSRITE SAFFIRE 6  The cost is around $200.00 .

NOW COMES THE SOFTWARE

3. DAW- DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATION: PROTOOLS, CUBASE, are all examples of this                                                                                     software. On a MAC GARAGEBAND will be the                                                                                   cheapest option to mixing. SEQUEL is a step up, and                                                                             still easy to use at $80 but if you want a little cheaper                                                                             the REAPER is a good option for WINDOWS users.
at only $60. If you want free software and of course                                                                                 who doesn't here are a few, ADOUR for MAC, or                                                                                   LMMS

4. KEYBOARD :    If your creating live music you do not need this. If your creating music that                                           has synthesized sounds then you need to invest into this. A 49 key keyboard will                                   work and you can find a good one for for just under $100 like the
M-AUDIO KEYSTATION-49. You can also get bigger one or a small one to                                         travel with that only has 32 keys.If you are going for cheap we advise you go for                                   a new one instead of used, to at least have a good quality cheap keyboard.

5. STUDIO MONITERS;  AKA SPEAKERS.  This is the only piece of equipment you should not go cheap with sound is clearly everything. With around $300 you can get a real good pair I actually recommend the SAMSON RESOLV A6 .

6. HEADPHONES :  See our post on headphones for the low here, also these headphones are good                                       for home studios. SENNHEISER'S HD-555'S or HD25'S.

7. CABLE:                 These are self explanatory, you need cables to be hook up your mic's and                                               monitors in the  right way. You need XLR CABLES for your microphones.
and 1/4 TS CABLES to hook up the Studio Monitors. The better the cables                                          does make the different in the sound and output.

For around $1,500 you can create a nice studio if will cost around $2,000 if you need to purchase a computer.

HOW TO INVADE FOREIGN MARKETS- HIPHOP MUSIC IN 10 COUNTRIES

HOW TO INVADE FOREIGN MARKETS- MUSIC

A lot of artist look at foreign markets and make them seem well how else to say it but foreign.

Yes a few of the countries that we will present on this list do speak different languages, some have a slight different culture then the free flowing American culture we are so use to but they all appreciate real HIPHOP.

Music in general is the only international language that all understand just by listening, even tho you may not be able to translate the words or know the meaning you will also know the feeling of a good song.

WHICH COUNTRIES SUPPORT HIPHOP THE MOST OUTSIDE OF THE USA? These are in no official order but these are the countries that are embracing the USA CULTURE AND VERSION of HIPHOP the most.

1. UK

England and the whole UK which actually consist of Wales & Ireland included. Are very accepting to the whole HIPHOP / RAP Movement and all its culture. UK has a drawing to alll types of USA HIPHOP especially the new stuff, so artist creting different and more futuristic sounds can start poking into this market fairly quickly, also take a listen to the Grime sound or ENGLAND which is a techno/dance/hiphop hybrid that has some major artist in the UK gaining global attention. Sample some of that sound infuse it with your American raps and boom you could be on your way to being the next big thing in the UK.

2. FRANCE

The french love the LATE 90's TO MID 2000'S  hiphop, yes they are in the middle of a new culture wave that is more accepting to the sounds of TRAP ETC. but they live for and go to shows by the thousands when it comes to what we now call oldskool hiphop, anything that sounds like
MOBB-DEEP, DMX, ETC. is right up the french hiphop heads alley. they study the culture and can actually give you a run for your money on hiphop music history. Don't let the language barrier fool you, as most french hiphoppers know more English then you think, and also if you ever heard FRENCH RAP you may want to learn French yourself, as it sound like one of the only languages outside of English that goes so well with the beat.

3. CANADA

The land right above the USA is a easy market to cross over to as they are more accepting to U.S RAPPERS then most places, they are also pretty easy to drive to especially if your a Eastcoast artist you can hit up Montreal, Quebec and Toronto in a 3-4 day trip or tour. Remember your passport tho, as people are no longer able to just cross into Canada with just an ID or license. Once you arrive you will find that the clud scene in Montreal is amazing. also Toronto is a cleaner version of NYC. This country is worth you making a trip and trying to grow your brand, do your research first on google or look up some Canadian artist and possibly work out collaboration opts while on your trip.

4. JAPAN
A little further then some of the other markets we have suggested so far but well worth the trip if you can foot the bill of $2,500 or so for flight hotel etc. Before you dive into booking the trip consider the time you will be flying into your planning, as you will need a day or two extra to recover from flights to and from this country. Check out the local hiphop scene via websites to discover some of the emerging artist theyhave in the scene, they as in the Japan love American or Enlgish Hiphop even tho most of the artist in Japan do rap in Japanese you will find them very welcoming.

5. AFRICA

Yes a good amount of people consider this land the birthplace of all African American music, because of it's heavy bass and rythem influence on the the world, so naturally Africa is a heavy hiphop supporter. Don't expect to get rich touring Africa but you can start making a impact discover an amazing country and visit some amazing once in a lifetime places. South Africa is the biggest known for the hiphop scene, but don't sleep on places like Zimbabwe, Kenya, Ghana and of course Nigeria.

6. AUSTRALIA

The land down under, has more to offer then you can imagine, not only do the people speak english and embrace hip hop Sydney of course is the major area for hiphop clubs and parties, but Melbourne and Adelaide and even Perth have some locales that you can visit and also intergrate with the artist that make the continent home.

7. DENMARK

Copenhagen and HipHop just seem like it was destined to be together. For European cities this city or should I say the country has a lot to offer embraces all elements of hip-hop and is hip and up to date on the culture.

8. AMSTERDAM

Off course the land of legal Cannabis smoke is also a great little place to expose fans to your music so when you take a break to hit the coffee shops make sure you also bring your music and let the people know about your work, most would appreciate to help discover and promote a new emerging U.S artist.

9.GERMANY

Since the fall of the great wall Germany has been so fascinted with American culutre and this does include the very underground and early 2000's sounds of hiphop real lyrics , lyrical MC'S with complex rhyme schemes and wordplay are most appreciated in the German cities and amoung the hip-hop culture of Berlin and surrounding areas. So if you do make the trip make sure you are rhyme ready it will also be good to collaborate with a german artist when in the country as you both can benefit from cross promotion ( the German market is giant)

4 PRODUCERS PER ARTIST.

                             4 PRODUCERS PER ARTIST

After a long discussion in the office by our small but very talented staff at THENXTSTAR
(shameless plug) lol.

We came up with a format and actual number to the mystery of how many producers should a recording artist have on one project.

We took all our answers from 5 different staff members and 4 others that happen to be in the office, we questioned each answer on why that number would be the best fit and after doing all this a few hours and beers later we came up with         4.

Here is why we chose 4 producers per artist album.

As a recording artist you need your 1 go to producer,  look at it like this ( DRAKE HAS 40) and every real artist has one producer who just gets it and can give your thousands of tracks that fit your style.  This producer should be your in house producer.

IN HOUSE PRODUCERS
This producer is your go to producer, so your contracts should reflect this, your in house producer is the key most important part to your music, besides marketing.  Negotiate with your in house producers on percentages of sales.

Creatively Royalties
are usually broken down 50/50 this means 50 towards production and then 50 towards artist label etc. This percentage can go up and down, but remember that this is the producer that will be creating your whole sound and also powering your career with fresh beats so treat them with respect and don't try to be to cheap on the percentage margin.
Anything lower then 25% of the royalties for an in house producers who creates more then 40% of your album is disrespect.

2nd Producer
This producer should be just as good as your go to producer, and here is why.
If your in house producer happens to get big headed LOL and leaves you,
you may loose your signature sound completely. The 2nd producer keeps a safety                         net for you can also compliment your sound and would give you the same quality                         beats at a lower rate or smaller percentage of the royalties if you create a hit single                       with this producer. Also it will create a small studio rivalry as both producers will be up to challenge each other on making your new hit sound. The 2nd producer can be offered some royalty interest on album sales but you should never offer more then 20%. unless the 2nd producer has actually produced more of the album then your in house producer
( this sometimes happens when then the in house producer is your go to producer for singles,
1-3 tracks. but the 2nd producer is the one who makes the more solid tracks to fill an album)

3rd Producer
The 3rd producer should be the one who pushes the envelope tests your limits on musical boundaries the producer that makes those slightly experimental tracks that will make you go outside of your safety zone. This producer should only be offered royalties on singles.
If they are going to contribute to your album then negotiate a buy out per track.
This producer should not have more then 2 tracks on your album unless your looking to transfer your sound and move this producer up your production line. Pay them off first. or negotiate a pay back per track once albums start selling etc. but not a royalties agreement.

4th producer
The 4th producer is technically the youngest or rawest in your group, this person has budding talent, and keeps a fresh spin added to the production circle. This producer could work wonders on mixtapes  and free tracks to give away. The 4th producer is good to flood the underground market. If your paying for these tracks only do cash or per track contracts, never do royalties for this one, unless this producer has made you a single.

In the event of making  a HIT SINGLE with an outside producer, other then your go to 4 producers, negotiate a contract for royalties only on that single. If your going to add that single to your album, then create a buy out clause, unless your willing to give this outside producer a chunk of royalties for one song on your 12-15 track album produced by your groupd of producers. A buy out is an amount you will pay this producer to own track outright with no royalties involved remember the 50/50% break down and with 4 producers already in your camp you can only split that 50% up so much before you start dipping into your own 50% portion. Also remember that if signed to a major label your portion is more like 25% the label has to eat.

GOOD LUCK FINDING YOUR TOP 4 PRODUCERS, ONCE YOU DO THIS A SOUND WILL BE ESTABLISHED FOR YOUR MUSIC AND CAREER SO CHOOSE WISELY.

UNLIMITED BY AGE - HIP HOP'S AGE LIMIT

Unlimited by Age - HIPHOP'S UNSPOKEN AGE LIMIT.

This has been a known underlining fact in the hiphop world, that the musical genre is plagued with a age cap or Age LIMIT. WHY? No one can really come up with the answer except that those that listen to hiphop, the more urban fans don't seem to gravitate to older rappers. Even if they once were one of their biggest fans of the artist in the past they tend to not check for this artist after a few years.

Forced retirements is what many talented artist are faced with from labels as they usually have a record drop sell and move on mentality. Once they push you for the designated  time the labels push on. Leaving many talented older artist on the sidelines of the rap/ hiphop game.

Are these artist less talented? NO.
It is just the fickle nature of the hiphop fans that has to change. YES.

It is very rare for an artist to get a age pass in the hiphop world, yes a few have gotten them and it could be because they are superior at the craft of making ageless hits etc.
JAY -Z is a prime example of one of the artist that has knocked out father time and his retirement clock. ( we know JAY-Z can spit) but if you look or start examining his career which we have and you can read that write up here later. You will notice that not one factor is clear on why he was chosen over shall we say it NAS or LL COOL J or other rappers that have had the rhyme skills swag or lady support in COOL J'S case.

Some of the artist that have seemed to have gotten the very exclusive AGE PASS - are

JAY-Z , SNOOP DOGG, ANDRE 3000, JEEZY, KANYE, BUN B  AND E-40 - if you look at this list you will not see any particular reason that specifically shows a format on why these artist are able to reach across a decade or more of music fans. We would have to just chuck it under the
(BECAUSE IT WORKS CATEGORY) but we must all as HIPHOP FANS or should I say
REAL HIPHOP FANS not forget our past just because we have the New, because it is our past that helps us create the new. We have more then enough room especially for great music and as we all get older it won't hurt us to grow with the artist that help fuel the fun of our youth.

Some talented artist that should still be around or that new artist should seek out for features are
DMX, SCARFACE, BEANIE SEGAL, TWISTA, AND MORE.

HOW TO EARN REAL FOLLOWERS - SUPPORTERS NOT JUST NUMBERS.

HOW TO EARN REAL FOLLOWERS - SUPPORTERS NOT JUST NUMBERS.

If you are serious about being in the music game then you must know how to play it correctly, and to play it correctly you must know as much as you can about SOCIAL MEDIA.

Why because social media can make you or break you when it comes to being a new artist.

What you need to get started on your way to gain real followers in the millions.

1. TIME -
you must dedicate at least 1 hour a day to social media, posting, updates, mentions and rt's, likes etc.

2. Plan -
pick which social media platforms you like best, and focus on those first. but don't neglect the others, you can always set up your account to post across other social media accounts from your favorites like Instagram and or Twitter.

3. Outsource -
Don't attempt to do it all alone, if you have a supportive family around you put them to work make them your street team, your boys yours girls your friends or crew should all be part of your street team helping you promote your music and show dates across social media as one unit.

4. NAME / BRANDING -
Your name needs to be recognized that what BRANDING is you need to get to the level of when people say example (JAY) you automatically think ( JAY-Z) . How do you do this by posting good content, always keep your hashtags in order not to many hashtags but solid ones that you will want to use for a long time and that you want people to remember. Examples of these hashtags can be ( album titles, artist official name,  hit single,  or a movement the artist is part of or starting.

5. FOLLOWSHIP -
To gain followers being real is the most important, real posts real likes, rt's all equal real followers. Don't be selfish and only look for likes yourself and never like anyone else's work or posts. Social media will notice and you will start to see that your followers won't grow. Think community, networking and being a good poster.

6. CONTENT -
Don't overwhelm your fanbase with just posts of your new music etc. switch it up let them know a little about you, post a pic of what you did that day , what you ate. or your favorite sports something real about your life, remember community feel = followship.

7. MARKETING PROGRAMS-
Never use sites that say they can get you a certain amount of followers in 24 hrs or 1,000 followers in what ever time, ( unless you know how they are doing this)  most of these companies as in 98% of them do not do organic following programs. organic following = actually reaching out to and finding real followers who have a interest in your music genre etc.
instead these 1,000 follower quick companies just use a system that increases your followers by clicking as many follow buttons as possible, hoping that for every 100 follows you gain 10 followers back they don't care what or who those followers are or even if the accounts are real, or active.

some of them even sell you the dream that you just gained 1,000 followers but you actually just paid to have 1,000 accounts that they control follow you. so be aware.

FAKE FOLLOWERS = FAKE CAREER, KEEP IT REAL

if you need an organic following program contact thenxtstar.com we do it the right way.

HEALTH INSURANCE ? DO YOU HAVE IT ( MUSIC ARTIST )

HEALTH INSURANCE ? DO YOU HAVE IT

As a recording artist one of the most costly mistakes you can make when signing a contract is not negotiating an insurance policy. Most artist never even think about Health Insurance because let's face it most of us don't think about health insurance until we need a doctor and at that time it may be to late.

Health insurance for a music artist is just like securing health insurance for an independent contractor, but the key difference is since you are a an independent contractor that works directly for one label, you can negotiate or demand that the label cover your health insurance plan and have it included in your contract.

When negotiating the Health insurance plan, make sure it is a family plan even if you are a single artist, ( you never know how life may change) and since these contracts usually last 12 month to 4-5 years, you want to covered fully in the event you have a family or spouse.

If you opt to just get a single person coverage plan, then remember to demand a contract revision when your marital circumstances change or you have a child.

The artist must also remember to include dental, which is very important for an artist. you should not pay fully out of pocket for this, or have to take an advance to get your teeth fixed, whiting etc.

If you are an artist that needs vision include this as well.

Most independent contractor health plans for families are around $500-$600 per month which is nothing for a label to cover, but if you don't bring it up they will NOT because they are going to save that money monthly by not spending it on you. REMEMBER ( THE LABEL IS IN THE BUSINESS OF MAKING MONEY NOT SPENDING OF LOOSING)

Even tho a healthy artist is important, the labels look at it as loosing money, because they don't see a true return on the money spent. Labels don't factor in that a healthy artist as important.
They would rather spend that $500-$600 on marketing to increase more sales and demand for shows.

So before you sign that deal, make sure your lawyer has included a segment for your health insurance coverage, make sure it is worded correctly, you need full coverage, for emergency services that also cover you nationally or if your on the verge of being a major artist internationally.

International health care coverage = This type of health coverage is tricky to attain because of the different lays in different countries etc. The easiest way to do it is by having the labels commit to take full responsibility of covering your health cost with out looking for any form of reimbursement.

below you can find some info and how to sign up for health insurance yourself, if your planning on a being a independent artist.

WOMEN MC'S - THE FIGHT TO MIC EQUALLY.

WOMEN MC'S - THE FIGHT TO MIC EQUALLY.

Since the first year that rap was created in the Bronx the Female MC has been fighting to get into the predominately male dominated game.

Obstacles that Female MC'S must face that shouldn't matter but just because they are female the industry influences them to follow a strict designed template in order to take them to the next level. The female MC'S that don't bend and want to keep their own identity and style are pressured and pushed to change or if not they must fend for themselves and stay independent.

Here is a list of 5 things that MAJOR LABELS / A & R'S and industry male exec's push on female artist that they don't expect from male counterparts.

1. WEIGHT -  They expect female artist to be a certain size, ( for male artist it don't matter)

2. HEIGHT -   Yes height, they prefer shorter female artist, ( for male artist it don't matter)
3. COLOR -    I hate to report this one, but they would much rather push a lighter skin artist then                                one with darker skin.

4.DANCE -   They expect the female artist to dance around twerk and gyrate, (for male artist it                                 don't matter)

5. SEXUAL CONTENT - More women actually buy albums then men but labels still want                                                           female artist to sell more sexually infused lyrics to men then ever.                                                         (for male artist it don't matter)
Not to Fret tho in this modern age, of digital sales technology and social media marketing the Female MC'S no longer has to compromise her ethics or sell her soul and body to get into a market that contains many wolves at the top. Break the cookie cutter perception of what a female MC'S is suppose to be and form a new perception that covers all types of women and lifestyles.
Women are beautiful in all shades & from all walks of life and this needs to be displayed in the music. If HIP HOP or RAP is  to remain a true art form that represents the REAL then we must be willing to except that not all women are 10's or what we deem perfect body shape, not all women are just sex crazed one dimensional lyricists. We must as fans artist and supporters of the movement push to break the stereotypes of what female MC's should be and except them for what they really are.

THEY ARE AN EQUAL COUNTERPART - TREAT THEM AND RESPECT THEM THAT WAY AND JUDGE THEM BY THE TALENT THEY HAVE NOT SOLELY BY THE LOOKS.

Strong female rap artist that helped pave the way without selling only sex and body enhancements are,

  1. LAURYN HILL
  2. MISSY ELLIOT
  3. QUEEN LATIFAH
  4. MC LYTE
  5. DA BRAT
All these female artist have sold millions of albums toured the world and kept their individual style and persona they also helped empower the female mc's in the underground.
Try to follow the roads they paved and add your individual identity to it and success will happen.

BELOW IS A LIST FROM RANKER WHICH POLLED WHAT THE WORLD THINKS ARE THE TOP FEMALE RAPPERS IN THE WORLD EVER.

PUBLISHING - HOW IT WORKS

                      PUBLISHING - HOW IT WORKS

You hear publishing everywhere, but to keep it real a bunch of people do not know what this really mean. We are here to explain it to you in plain English.

PUBLISHING WHAT IS IT? :

When a music artist creates any new music, they initially have a basic copyright, but once you get your work professionally copyrighted to show ownership which is very important.
( see our blog post ), then you will need to find a publishing company                                                   to help represent your work to be used commercially. PUBLISHING COMPANIES make sure you as an artist get paid anytime your music is used commercially. To start the process once you found a company you like, then you will need to sign a publishing contract. With a publishing contract the ARTIST SONGWRITER COMPOSER, assign the copyright of your work to the publishing company, in return the company licenses the compositions and tracks when they are used anywhere commercially they also collect royalties and distribute them to the creators of the music composition.

HOW TO BECOME PUBLISHED? :

To get published is not as difficult as some say, all you need is                                                          original work written or composed by you, if you use samples then you need copyright clearances for these songs with proof. Once you have a few songs or albums of solid work then you go PUBLISHING COMPANY HUNTING see links below.

THE RISK YOU TAKE BY NOT OWNING PUBLISHING:

No easier way to say this but you will loose out on MONEY$$$.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. ROYALTIES. How ever you want to call it, if your publishing is not together then you will not gain any of these. No real artist can have a successful career without establishing some good publishing.

here is a detailed list of the music publishing companies you can check out and try to have one of them represent your work to the world.

ALSO CHECK OUT: MUSICXRAY- it is like having a A&R right on your computer.

TAXES 101 FOR INDEPENDENT MUSIC ARTIST

                                        TAXES 101

YOU ARE MORE THEN AN ARTIST YOU ARE A                                                    BUSINESS.

Taxes is a word that has humbled many in the USA for years and it seems like it is getting worse as taxes are getting higher, the more you make the more they take. Who is they
UNCLE SAM, THE MAN, JOHNNY HANDOUT whatever you call the GOVT. lol.

The truth is that if you know what your doing the pain of doing taxes and setting them aside doesn't have to be that bad.

One of the first thing you have to do when you decide to become a music artist on the business side of things is look up tax laws for musicians and performers. Here you will find a few vital points of info that will help you on the way.

Form 1040  - Covers self employed - which is you the music artist, even if you have a day job.

Schedule -c  - Help report how much money you made or lost in the year doing business

Schedule C ez - You can use this form if your a company of ONE or Sole Proprietor

Schedule SE - Help calculate the amount of self employed taxes owed to govt. as small business

Once you get familiar with the phrases, terms and govt websites etc. Now you have to put in some paper work and computer time.  A little effort  is needed to finally get your small business tax id, even a single person. YOU ALONE, can qualify for a small business id; and you don't have to pay a 3rd party business to get this done for you. Take about 20 minutes to get online and fill out the forms yourself. Go here to get it going IRS website

After you file to get your small business id it will take between 30-45 days to arrive.
now you are officially a small business. ( simple right? )

Now that you are MUSIC.INC ( example)  you need to start keeping books, nowadays it is so much easier with even apps like quickbooks, intuit, turbotax etc that allow you to enter deductions etc from your phone or tablet asap.

After you start to master how to enter your deductions into your small business tax forms via digital it is very important to turn one of your ( JORDAN SHOE BOXES OR SAFE) lol. into a receipt box. Why you ask? in case of an AUDIT.

Receipt tip- always right on the back the date, store or place or purchase and the amount-
( for some dumb reason the ink on receipts fades after 60 days or so)
also keep your receipts for at least 3 years.

When making purchases it isn't necessary to have a separate bank account or card, but it does make it easier to keep track of what your spending  and what can be deducted. You don't want to mix personal use items with your business items, the IRS does not play and they may let you get away with fraud for a little bit then drop the hammer on you, that is why the receipts and keeping records is so important.

Most people who run business attempt to set aside some time every 3 months to add all the receipts, deductions etc on the tax forms and that way you won't fall behind, some even pay taxes owed quarterly.  Music artist can choose this method, but if your blessed to be on the road, or have a day job and not enough time for this. then keeping all receipts or at least having a separate account with all bank statements that reflect business use will keep you covered when April 15th shows up. NOW WE ALL HAVE UP TO APRIL 18TH and if you are late filing you have an amnesty option. So I guess UNCLE SAM is not that bad after all.
GOOD LUCK.

COPY RIGHT - HOW TO GET IT DONE CORRECTLY

COPY RIGHT - HOW TO GET IT DONE CORRECTLY

To COPYRIGHT = To own your creation outright, in this case copyright is to own your music.

Under international law, copyright is thee automatic right of the creator of work. That means that as soon as you write down a song or make a recording it is copyrighted.
in order to enforce this copyright tho you need to register it to prove ownership.
here is how to do this process.

BELOW ARE THE EASIEST 7 STEPS TO GET YOUR MUSIC OFFICIAL
                                                                  COPY-WRITTEN.

  1. Make a copy of your song, you can make a cd, usb drive or mp3 mp4. All these methods may be used to create a hard copy. As soon as its recorded it is copyrighted, now you have to register it.
  2. Go to US GOVT. SITE http://www.copyright.gov/. click on electronic copyright office, here you can make electronic copyright filing. To register is simple and it wil only take 4- 5 months to be processed instead of waiting 12 months or more via snail mail.
  3. Register a free account once you have account registered you can use this for all your copyright needs.
  4. Complete your online application, click on register a new claim, copy wright services. answer a few questions and proceed to complete process.
  5. Pay the $35 fee to register it can be via debit/ credit etc.
  6. Upload a copy of your work many forms are accepted, If you don't want to send an electronic copy you can send a hard copy ( but this may delay processing time)
  7. Wait for copyright to be processed now you are complete, protected and ready to go.
TIPS: instead of copyrighting each song you can copyright per album this will still cover each song individually and protect the all works that the album contains. So for $35 you can protect the album and all songs in this album.

HOW TO CUT COST AS A MUSIC ARTIST -

HOW TO CUT COST AS A MUSIC ARTIST

We are not telling you to be cheap, but we are giving you ways to not blow your money away on things that aren't really needed, until you have money you can literally throw away

1. Copyright-

the easy way to save instead of copyrighting each track, wait and then copyright your whole album, it is legal it will cover all tracks on that album and you won't have to pay separate filing fees for each copyrighted track.

2. Album Art-

In the digital age if you are printing cd's then don't waist money on a 3-5 page cd booklet explaining every part of your life etc. keep it simple and neat $45-$75 should cover your cost for designs. and then a one page insert for cd's covers double side printed will be more then enough.

3.  PAPERWORK -

Take time to do research google works wonders, and instead of paying out to have other companies do the simple task of filing forms for you, you can do them yourself in a little bit of time, which can save you a good amount of money. ( see our write up on taxes

4. CREW STREET TEAM OR ENTOURAGE-

A GREAT SERIES, but in real life it can get very expensive quickly, when doing little shows you don't need 10 people with you. take maybe 3-4 at the most, DJ, CAMERA PERSON, and 1 or two road dogs one should be your manager, every one else can support by going to the show or buying the album.

5. EXPENSIVE RENTALS FOR VIDEOS  -

Every one is balling on videos, but 100% of US the music fans know that for the most part these cars etc are not the reality for 90% of the artist. ( not to discourage- but reality check some) Save your money on these high price rentals for videos, and come up with different concepts etc. at the end of the day the music is what people are most interested in , and you might find yourself owning one of those high end luxury cars with the money you save now.

6. STOP PRINTING CD'S

The CD era is dead, So to stay in budget don't print these anymore, if you must for some reason then remember #2 about simple covers etc. But to be honest cd's are usually used as place holders, weed plates or tossed within 2 days of getting them and most aren't listen to today because a lot of the new cars don't even have cd players any more.

stick to these 6 steps and you will be saving some money, to help fund your next album.

7 MOST POPULAR MUSIC SITES FOR ARTIST TO BE FEATURED ON

7 MOST POPULAR MUSIC SITES FOR                ARTIST TO BE  FEATURED ON

This is a needed list for any emerging independent artist to keep, here are the top 7 music playing sites on the net and more. You need to take all the steps you can to get your music featured in at least half of the sites on this list.

1. Pandora
NOT ONLY FOR MAJOR ARTIST ANYMORE, follow these steps to get                                            featured, it is fairly easy to get your music added on this site, and then you can just                              start promoting that your music can be found on                                                                                       Pandora https://submit.pandora.com/

This site is a little harder to get featured on, but they do have an artist                                                   rising section so with a little determination you can do the research and                                                 submit your music to them and it may take a little longer as they get                                                       many submissions, but plan accordingly and keep pushing.

This site is pretty easy to get your music set up, and you can sell unlimited                                            albums with them ( of course they take a percentage of sales, but it is pretty fair,                                    and the start up cost to set your record store up is only $25 currently one time                                        fee, no other payments needed. It will take you just about 5 minutes to get                                            things going https://play.google.com/artists/

Free to sign up easy to use and many people as in fans use it just to find new                                         music, or free music so why not ad yours and when people are searching they                                       may stumble across your music and like it, or add it to a playlist.

5. SPOTIFY:
To get your music on Spotify follow this link
here https://www.spotifyartists.com/  it will explain how the channel or                                                 network works and how to start the process of getting your music on Spotify

6. MYSPACE:
YES MYSPACE IS STILL AROUND, and people use it more as music site                                         then ever, Maybe JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE had a little to do with this, but use                                       this link to start the process on how to get your music added                                                                   https://myspace.com/discover/songs

7. TUNEIN:
A bunch of people may of heard of them, but a lot of these people just think as                                    them as a digital radio station. ( which essentially is what they are) but how to                                      get your music added on TUNEIN you would initally have to create a station                                        but with this station you can broadcast all your music, and maybe some music                                      from others in your circle also if you create other content you can showcase it                                      here as a musical / podcast and build an audience. follow this link to start the                                        process. http://tunein.com/broadcasters/
